A Relationship Between Ethical Behavior And Habits

Book II of Aristotle’s Nicomachean Ethics covers an array of important topics regarding the realms of ethics. Some of the themes of these major insights includes moral virtue, choices, and development. The most important themes Aristotle address in book II includes the relationship between ethical behavior and habits, the cultural influence of the formation of good character, and the excess and deficient aspect of virtue, where virtuous behavior is the mean. If one would propose the following question: are individuals born with bad virtuous behaviors or good virtuous behaviors? Aristotle would answer neither. Aristotle states that â€Å"the virtues are implanted in us neither by nature nor contrary to nature: we are by nature quipped with the ability to receive them, and habit brings this ability to completion† (Pg. 33). Humans, having the ability to learn virtuous behaviors, would be at a disadvantage in life if born with bad characteristics. Aristotle strongly believe d that humans are born with the capability to perform virtuous behaviors habitually, given that we learn them by doing them. Moreover, in order to know what behaviors are virtuous, we must look at an individual who acts virtuously. If an individual is known as a caring person, then at one point their life, he or she learned and practiced the qualities of a caring person.
